The Sheriff's Sharp Shooters Club takes
diet and nutrition very serious. Some parents may have a concern given
recent press coverage over the unfortunate accidents at the collage level.
In general there is no reason for a wrestler to diet at this level. Most
tournaments during the season that we (The Sheriff's Sharp Shooters
Wrestling Club) participate in are blocked weights. Blocked weights means
that wrestlers will be grouped together in weight brackets generally
within 1 - 3 pounds of each other. In some tournaments your wrestler may
be the heaviest in their block or the lightest, but in general these
weights are all within a very small range.
In rare cases where a wrestler may be within 1 - 2 pounds of a weight
class for a specific tournament the Sheriff's Sharp Shooters Coaches along
with the parents will discuss the all of the possibilities before a
wrestler chooses to loss weight for a tournament. It is the Parent and
Wrestlers choice on weight loss. The Sheriff's Sharp Shooters Coaches will
not force any wrestler to loose weight and can advise on the benefits or
negative of doing so.
If as a parent or wrestler you have any concerns about weight or weight
classes please talk to the coaches. If you feel, at any time, an issue
surrounding diet or weight gain or loss please do not hesitate to express
your self to the coaches. We are here to make sure the wrestlers enjoy the
sport and that they do so in good health.

Day Meal
On tournament days your wrestler will be required to weigh-in early in the
morning and then wrestle later on. In general there is at least 1 hour
between weigh-ins and wrestling matches. Breakfast on these days should be
healthy, light and containing the least amount of sugar as possible. Eggs
with toast are ideal. Some wrestlers will choose to eat their breakfast
meal after weigh-ins at the tournament location and this is an expectable
practice. You do not want to feed your wrestler a lot of food prior to a
match as the body will focus the blood supply on the digestive processes
and leave the wrestler feeling sluggish and tired.
During the day, at a tournament, wrestlers will get hungry and want to
snack. Fresh fruit such as grapes, apples, oranges, etc. are excellent
snacks without giving the wrestler a false sense of energy they would get
from a candy bar. Some energy bars contain a lot of sugar and should not
be consumed however, other energy bars containing less sugar and more
natural ingredients can be used on tournament days.
Many wrestlers will wrestle long after lunch at tournaments; during lunch
wrestlers will want to eat food items high in protein or carbohydrates
(Peanut Butter, nuts, and raw vegetables are good sources of protein).
Discourage your wrestler from the sugary snacks they give a false sense of
energy and generally burn off quickly leaving wrestlers feeling tiered and
lazy. Beverages should be water, Gatorade or fruit juice.

Family Meal at
Tournaments
Many families pack a lunch for a tournament. This is both cost efficient
and a good way to control what your wrestler eats. However, at most
tournaments and in most gyms, coolers are welcome but be smart and pack
them with good nutritious foods. For Parents, siblings, and relatives,
concession stands are usually available at the tournaments and meets. The
local club does usually receive funds from the sale of goods in these
concessions and help to continue the improvements in our sport.
